The purpose of the continuous assessment is: • To develop an understanding of how a Business Analytics process might be leveraged by an organisation to align their strategic objectives with their Business Analytics capabilities. Students are expected to complete the assignment ensuring that they are submitted by the specified date. All workbook submissions must be typed, be well laid out, written in an academic style with appropriate headings (introduction, main part and concluding comments) and sections. Please ensure that all submissions are entirely your own work — for UCD's policy on plagiarism click on the link below (please see Appendix 2 for further information on Plagiarism and the policy on the Late Submission of Coursework).
Module Assessment Components
In the following pages, further details of each assessment component are presented along with expectations in relation to prior preparation and completion.
(i) Continuous Assessment (40%)
Students will work in groups to apply a Business Analytics Process to a real-world business. The deliverables will include a report analysing and forecasting the performance of a company, and capturing the group's outputs from the process using the frameworks as taught (Cleverton, Schmarzo), and a video submission (in lieu of a presentation) targeted at the Board of Directors of the company. The video submission will have a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
Assignment Question
Given that AI chatbots will be the dominant platform for users in the foreseeable future, and OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT) being the first and the current dominant platform, your task will be to analyse the current market environment and recommend to the board of ChatGPT on the following.
Source for the types of data that will be required for the analysis and strive to answer the following questions:
  1. ChatGPT currently charges the following for paid subscribers and a free tier for all other users. ChatGPT Plus for $20/month for individuals, and ChatGPT Team for businesses at $30/user/month ($25/user/month annually) for 2 or more users. A higher-tier ChatGPT Pro plan costs $200/month and includes access to its suite of products and the "o1" reasoning model. Is this the correct approach? (Prices are in USD)
  2. Based on Davenport's framework in "Keeping up with the Quants", frame the problem and recommend a correct approach, including projected revenue for year 2026 and 2027. State and justify the assumptions used and include real life data and figures where possible.
  3. Provide 2 different customer personas for users who would use ChatGPT.
Requirements: • You will form your own group of 3–4. In your chosen group, present a written report (.docx or .pdf format), a 10-slide PowerPoint (.pptx format) and a 10-minute video presentation (recorded through Zoom or Teams or Google Meet, uploaded to YouTube and made private, and URL submitted via Brightspace) to the Board of Directors outlining your suggestions and proposal based on the questions above. • Use actual real-life facts and statistics to support your proposal. • Provide a cover page that lists all the group members with name and student ID clearly stated. All students in the group will receive the same score unless majority of the group members send in an email (with evidence) to me about a "free rider". In that event, an investigation will be conducted and marks may ultimately differ for each group member. • Use consistent in-text citation for referencing. • Do not plagiarise. Do not exceed 20% similarity index score. • Provide an executive summary and clear headings for each part of your report. Marks will be awarded for good organization of report and executive summary. • Do not exceed 3000 words for the report (excluding bibliography, cover page, diagrams and the executive summary).
(ii) Examination (60%)
The main examination (duration two hours) will focus on module themes and the material covered in the text, lecture notes, group assignment, recommended readings, and class exercises and discussions. For this, the students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of theory and practice of Business Analytics addressed throughout the module. The examination question format will be designed to allow you to show your understanding of the topics discussed and also reveal your learning (new and prior). More specific guidelines regarding the examination format and questions will be provided during the final class session.
PART 5: GRADING
This section of the Study Guide provides students with details of the UCD grading system and also explains criterion referenced grading (UCD Policy). Under criterion referenced grading…

Step 2|Session 1:
Step 3|Session 1:
  • Communicate/Act:
Step 5|BAM:
Customer Segments → Value Proposition → Cost Structure → Revenue Streams

Step 1|Frame:
Step 2|Review Previous Findings:
Step 3–5|Solve:

Step 3|Modelling:

历史增长率:Growth_t = (Revenue_t ÷ Revenue_t-1) − 1
Forecast Revenue_t = Revenue_t-1 × (1 + Assumed Growth_t)

Step 4|Data Collection:

2023[填写]USD bn[实际/媒体估算][出处][填写]
2024[填写]USD bn[实际/媒体估算][出处][填写]
2025[填写]USD bn[媒体估算/预测][出处][填写]

Step 5|Data Analysis:

Step 6|Communicate/Act:
Conservative、Base、Optimistic

Persona
Persona
Tasks
Decisions & Questions
Pain Points
(Plus)
Maya,28
  • Pain Points:
(Pro)
  • Work environment / characteristics:
  • Pain Points:

Executive Summary

1. Introduction

[OpenAI, 2026a; Reuters, 2025a]

2. Stage 1: Frame

2.1 Problem Recognition

2.2 Review of Previous Findings: Pricing

[Competitor Sources, 2026]

3. Stage 2: Solve

3.1 Modelling and Assumptions

公开年度观测值有限,因此不以少量年份拟合线性回归,而使用 Revenue_t = Consumer_t + Business_t + API/Other_t 的驱动因素模型。
2026 Base2027 Base
Consumer subscriptions$6.00bn$10.50bn$15.23bn
Business / Enterprise$3.20bn$6.72bn$11.09bn
API / Other$3.50bn$8.23bn$14.39bn
Total$12.70bn$25.45bn$40.71bn

3.2 Customer Personas

[Schmarzo, 2016]

4. Stage 3: Communicate / Act

  2. 优先扩大 Business/Enterprise,并用席位活跃率、续约与生产率证明价值。

4.1 Limitations

5. Conclusion

Sample Report B|

Executive Summary

1. Introduction

[Davenport, 2013]

2. Stage 1: Frame

2.1 Problem Recognition

2.2 Review of Previous Findings: Pricing

[OpenAI, 2026a; Competitor Sources, 2026]

3. Stage 2: Solve

3.1 Modelling and Assumptions

模型把总收入拆为 Consumer、Business/Enterprise 和 API/Other。
2026 Base2027 Base
Consumer subscriptions$6.00bn$11.40bn$17.10bn
Business / Enterprise$3.20bn$7.00bn$12.30bn
API / Other$3.50bn$8.50bn$16.20bn
Total$12.70bn$26.90bn$45.60bn

3.2 Customer Personas

[Schmarzo, 2016]

4. Stage 3: Communicate / Act

4.1 Limitations

Pro Lite

5. Conclusion

Part 1

Define Business Analytics and explain why it should be strategy-driven rather than merely data-driven.
Illustration
Illustration
  • 这条链路可表述为:Strategic objectives → Decisions → Analytical questions → Tools and data → Insights → Action。
Illustration
Compare descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics
Illustration
Basis of comparison:
A take-away pizzeria wants to increase market share. Explain how the manager should use a strategy-driven Business Analytics approach to support the decision on pizza prices.
Illustration
A pizzeria manager must decide how many staff to roster and how much of each ingredient to order for next week. Explain how descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics can support these decisions.
Descriptive Analytics(描述性分析)过去发生了什么?
Predictive Analytics(预测性分析)下周可能发生什么?
Prescriptive Analytics(规范性/处方性分析)经理应如何行动?
Summary

Part 2

Explain the 5 Vs of data and their relevance to Business Analytics.
Illustration
Volume数据量(amount of data);可从 megabytes 到 petabytes。
Explain why Business Analytics is more than the analysis stage of the data life cycle.
Illustration
Scope:
How should an organisation match analytical questions to tools? Illustrate with suitable tool categories.
Illustration
Decision and question:
A grocery retailer wants to identify which items are purchased together. What analytical approach should be used, and what output does it produce?
A service provider wants to determine which customers are likely to switch (churn) to another provider. Explain the appropriate analytical approach, data requirement and output.
  • 该问题是“某个实体属于哪一类”(what kind of entity is this),适合使用 classification(分类)。
  • 训练数据必须有标签(labelled):客户是 churned 还是 did not churn;因此这是 supervised learning(监督学习)。
Illustration
Summary

Part 3

Explain Davenport’s Frame - Solve - Communicate/Act process.
Illustration
Frame(界定)1. Problem Recognition;2.
Solve(解决)3. Modelling;4. Data Collection;5.
Communicate/Act(沟通/行动)6.
  • Communicate/Act
Purpose:
Explain the first five steps of Thinking Like a Data Scientist and how they align analytics with business strategy.
Illustration
  1. Identify Key Business Initiative (KBI):KBI
What happened?、What will happen?、What should I do?,分别连接描述、预测与处方性分析。
1. Identify Key Business Initiative (KBI)
2. Develop Stakeholder Personas
3. Identify Strategic Nouns
4. Capture Business Decisions
5. Brainstorm Business Questions
6. Leverage “By” Analysis用 I want to [verb] [metric] by [attribute] 找出值得探索的变量与细分维度。
7. Create Actionable Scores
8. Putting Analytics into Action
Explain the role of “By” analysis, actionable scores and putting analytics into action.
Illustration
I want to [verb] [metric] by [attribute]。
  • Actionable score:
Metrics and variables:
Foot Locker has identified “improve merchandising effectiveness” as a Key Business Initiative. Apply the first five steps of Thinking Like a Data Scientist to this case.
Illustration
2. Develop Stakeholder Personas相关 personas 包括 Customers、Store Managers、Merchandise Managers 和 Buyers。
3. Identify Strategic Nouns关键实体为 Customers、Products、Marketing Campaigns 和 Stores。
4. Capture Business Decisions
5. Brainstorm Business Questions提出 What happened?、What will happen?、What should I do?,分别连接 Descriptive、Predictive、Prescriptive Analytics。
Using the Foot Locker customer and product promotion decisions, explain how steps 6–8 turn business questions into action.
Illustration
  • Step 6 — By Analysis:与 subject matter experts(SMEs)和 analytics team 协作,使用 I want to [verb] [metric] by [attribute] 的形式,寻找可能更好预测绩效的指标和变量。
What customers are most receptive to what types of merchandising campaigns by ...?
What products are most successful with what merchandising campaigns by ...?
Illustration
1. Key Business Initiative
2. Stakeholder Personas
3. Strategic Nouns
4. Business Decisions
7. Actionable Scores
8. Putting Analytics into Action
Davenport vs Thinking Like a Data Scientist

Part 5

Explain how context should shape data communication.
Illustration
Illustration
Audience:

Part 6

BA Capability Framework四项能力:Governance、Culture、Technology、People。
Explain the Business Analytics capability framework and why Business Analytics is more than analytical tools.
Illustration
Illustration
Culture(文化)通过证据导向管理(evidence-based management)、嵌入性(embeddedness)、高层领导与支持(executive leadership and support)、沟通(communication)形成支持 BA 的组织环境。
People(人员)结合技术、业务与管理的 skills and knowledge,以及 entrepreneurship and innovation。
Illustration
Using the resource-based view, explain when BA capabilities can contribute to sustainable competitive advantage.
Illustration
  • Resource-based view
Valuable
Rare
Inimitable
Theory:
Illustration
An organisation has data management, systems integration and reporting technology, but lacks clear decision rights, executive support and people with the required business and management knowledge. Use the BA capability framework to assess this situation.
Illustration
  • 其 Culture capability 也不完整:缺少 executive leadership and support,不利于 evidence-based management、embeddedness 和 communication。
  • 其 People capability 存在缺口:除技术能力外,课程还强调 business skills and knowledge、management skills and knowledge,以及 entrepreneurship and innovation。
A manager argues that investing in analytics technology alone will create sustainable competitive advantage. Evaluate this claim using the BA capability framework and the Part 6 research findings.
Illustration
BA capability

Part 8 - 未完成

Define data ethics and explain the idea of Business Analytics for Good.
Illustration
  • Data Ethics:
    Illustration
    Illustration
Definition:
Explain key GDPR principles, rights and PDPR considerations relevant to Business Analytics.
Illustration
Data minimisation(数据最小化)仅收集和处理实现目的所必需的数据。
Processing context:
Explain the requirements of Trustworthy AI and how they support ethical BA.
  • 四项伦理原则:尊重人的自主性(respect for human autonomy)、防止伤害(prevention of harm)、公平(fairness)、可解释性(explicability)。
Illustration
  • 七项 key requirements
    Illustration
Explain how ESR can be embedded in a Business Analytics process and in an organisation.
Illustration
    Illustration
Users & Customers(用户与客户)哪些用户和客户面对相关挑战?
Stakeholders(利益相关者)谁受影响或能影响方案?
Utility(效用)预期收益与伤害是什么?
Rights(权利)哪些权利受到尊重或侵犯?
Justice(正义/公平)结果是否公平,是否存在偏袒或歧视?
ISO 26000 Guidance on Social Responsibility:Accountability、Transparency、Ethical behaviour、Respect for stakeholder interests、Respect for the rule of law、Respect for international norms of behaviour、Respect for human rights。
    Illustration
将 System and stakeholders 扩展为 Users & Customers、Stakeholders;用 Utility、Rights、Justice、Common Good、Virtue 分析影响;最后以 process integration、ISO 26000 或 IEEE 7000-2021 说明组织层面的治理安排。
Using the Facebook “engagement” metric example in the lecture, explain why metric selection is an ethical issue and how the metric could be reframed for Business Analytics for Good.
Illustration
Evaluate the use of solely automated decision-making in an online credit application or e-recruiting practice, using GDPR, PDPR considerations and Trustworthy AI.
讲义以 automatic refusal of an online credit application 和 e-recruiting without human intervention 说明:完全基于 automated processing 的决定若产生法律效果或类似重大影响,会带来重要风险。
  • Trustworthy AI 的检视重点包括 human agency and oversight、privacy and data governance、transparency、diversity, non-discrimination and fairness、accountability,以及 technical robustness and safety。
For a proposed Business Analytics use case, explain how BEC + BAM and organisational standards can embed ESR from development through to organisational practice.
Accountability、Transparency、Ethical behaviour、Respect for stakeholder interests、Respect for the rule of law、Respect for international norms of behaviour、Respect for human rights

Illustration
  • 这条链路可表述为:Strategic objectives → Decisions → Analytical questions → Tools and data → Insights → Action。

Basis of comparison:
A take-away pizzeria wants to increase market share. Explain how the manager should use a strategy-driven Business Analytics approach to support the decision on pizza prices.
Illustration
A pizzeria manager must decide how many staff to roster and how much of each ingredient to order for next week. Explain how descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics can support these decisions.
Descriptive Analytics(描述性分析)过去发生了什么?
Predictive Analytics(预测性分析)下周可能发生什么?
Prescriptive Analytics(规范性/处方性分析)经理应如何行动?
Summary

Part 2

Explain the 5 Vs of data and their relevance to Business Analytics.
Illustration
Volume数据量(amount of data);可从 megabytes 到 petabytes。
Explain why Business Analytics is more than the analysis stage of the data life cycle.
Illustration
Scope:
How should an organisation match analytical questions to tools? Illustrate with suitable tool categories.
Illustration
Decision and question:
A grocery retailer wants to identify which items are purchased together. What analytical approach should be used, and what output does it produce?
A service provider wants to determine which customers are likely to switch (churn) to another provider. Explain the appropriate analytical approach, data requirement and output.
  • 该问题是“某个实体属于哪一类”(what kind of entity is this),适合使用 classification(分类)。
  • 训练数据必须有标签(labelled):客户是 churned 还是 did not churn;因此这是 supervised learning(监督学习)。
Illustration
Summary

Part 3

Explain Davenport’s Frame - Solve - Communicate/Act process.
Illustration
Frame(界定)1. Problem Recognition;2.
Solve(解决)3. Modelling;4. Data Collection;5.
Communicate/Act(沟通/行动)6.
  • Communicate/Act
Purpose:
Explain the first five steps of Thinking Like a Data Scientist and how they align analytics with business strategy.
Illustration
  1. Identify Key Business Initiative (KBI):KBI
What happened?、What will happen?、What should I do?,分别连接描述、预测与处方性分析。
1. Identify Key Business Initiative (KBI)
2. Develop Stakeholder Personas
3. Identify Strategic Nouns
4. Capture Business Decisions
5. Brainstorm Business Questions
6. Leverage “By” Analysis用 I want to [verb] [metric] by [attribute] 找出值得探索的变量与细分维度。
7. Create Actionable Scores
8. Putting Analytics into Action
Explain the role of “By” analysis, actionable scores and putting analytics into action.
Illustration
I want to [verb] [metric] by [attribute]。
  • Actionable score:
Metrics and variables:
Foot Locker has identified “improve merchandising effectiveness” as a Key Business Initiative. Apply the first five steps of Thinking Like a Data Scientist to this case.
Illustration
2. Develop Stakeholder Personas相关 personas 包括 Customers、Store Managers、Merchandise Managers 和 Buyers。
3. Identify Strategic Nouns关键实体为 Customers、Products、Marketing Campaigns 和 Stores。
4. Capture Business Decisions
5. Brainstorm Business Questions提出 What happened?、What will happen?、What should I do?,分别连接 Descriptive、Predictive、Prescriptive Analytics。
Using the Foot Locker customer and product promotion decisions, explain how steps 6–8 turn business questions into action.
Illustration
  • Step 6 — By Analysis:与 subject matter experts(SMEs)和 analytics team 协作,使用 I want to [verb] [metric] by [attribute] 的形式,寻找可能更好预测绩效的指标和变量。
What customers are most receptive to what types of merchandising campaigns by ...?
What products are most successful with what merchandising campaigns by ...?
Illustration
1. Key Business Initiative
2. Stakeholder Personas
3. Strategic Nouns
4. Business Decisions
7. Actionable Scores
8. Putting Analytics into Action
Davenport vs Thinking Like a Data Scientist

Part 5

Explain how context should shape data communication.
Illustration
Illustration
